I thought I'd let you all in on what I'm reading right now. I have read C.S. Lewis, his book Mere Christianity is a must. I have read Tolkien (and am disturbingly nerdy about it--just ask my family), but had never read his mentor, either. The man who influenced them must have been a giant, right?
Bigger than giant. The Anchoress referenced G.K. Chesterton for the umpteenth time and I thought to myself, I gotta finally read this, I'm sick of being out of the loop.
Thirteen pages in and he had more money quotes than I could high-light. My faith is renewing with each paragraph. I have his other books coming in the mail, too. I eagerly anticipate reading them! I'll include the links to them all. By the way, he is immensely entertaining to read and while the topics are chewy, his prose goes down easy. You'll enjoy him, I promise.
I haven't bought this last one yet, but I'm going to soon. He was prolific. It's going to take me a while to get through his works.
Very good! It's always nice to hear what is a good read.
ReplyDeleteI read Orthodoxy a couple years ago. It's great..especially when you're a new Catholic and need bucking up after all the scandals and dumbing-down since Vatican II.
ReplyDeleteI have so many issues with my local parish and the American church that it's essential to read the Catechism and books like this to remind yourself what the Church is really about.
Another great and short read is Splendor Veritatis.
Thank you, Carol, for the suggestion. For the record, I'm not Catholic. Chesterton became a devoted Catholic and eventually his wife joined him. Thus far, his defense of orthodoxy seems to be a defense of all Christian orthodoxy and applicable to people of all Christian sects/denominations.
ReplyDeleteif you are reading chesterton, try "the man who was thursday", an absolutely brilliant creation allegory.
ReplyDeleteEarl,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip. The real problem is time. With a brood o' kids, I must be choosy! So what would you prioritize as Chesterton's best work?
Speaking as someone with "brood of kids", unless you have an annotated version of ...Thursday and unlimited bathroom time, I wouldn't put that one high on the list but it is good!
ReplyDeleteChesterton rocks. Try "What's Wrong With the World" and the Father Brown story "The Queer Feet."
ReplyDeleteI received "Mere Christianity" as an anonymous gift yesterday. I'm
ReplyDeletelooking forward to reading it and I consider it as a gift from the heart.
I am deeply greaful!
After your post, I ordered this book through Amazon. However,I received this same book through WalMart.com as
ReplyDelete"A gift for you", only a few days later. It was wraped in blue paper with a white bow around the package. No name was given. Because I just read your post on this, I thought it was from you. Turns out however, after writing Amazon, that the seller has WalMart ship it that way. Oh well! A longing heart and wishful thinking I suppose.
