Making Choices

Perhaps the best kind of problem is between two good choices. Both have upsides, neither have many downsides. How are decisions made at this crossroad?

Well, a decision is made or indecision is a decision. And we live with the consequences. At least, that's what grown-ups do: Get good advice, listen to the experts, accumulate data and then take an educated jump.

Some of us are hung up on the "perfect" choice and some of us are hung up what other people do, and some of us despise choices because it means that there is a "no" in there somewhere--to choose one thing is to deny another.

Believe it or not, this is where faith comes in. When a person believes that his life has a purpose, and even more, that it is God-guided, a choice is made and it is left to God to reveal the rightness or wrongness of it. One mentor told me, "Melissa, always go through the door that's open." Well, I've walked through doors only to hit a brick wall. Sometimes we aren't guided until we have bumped into what we shouldn't do. Either way, for a person guided by faith, it is comforting to know that our limited human vision is supplemented by the One who sees all.

Decisions. Decisions. The gift of being human is the gift of free choice. It is set before us, and hopefully we make decisions that lead to life. (Deuteronomy 30:19)
