So who won this thing? Probably no one. But it’s usually that way anyway. The writers apparently did get a better deal than the directors in the highly disputed area of new online media, earning for the first time a small piece of the “producer’s gross” after an exclusion known in the industry as a “window.” The devil will be in the details on this (not to mention as yet unknown patterns of Internet usage) but the producers may be finally waking up to the truth - in the area of television especially, writers are more important than directors.Interesting. With the advent of new media, the creative-types are writing and directing (and producing and taking out the trash) their own material. What's so difficult? Writers are often annoyed that the intent of their work is misused and abused by busy-bodied directors and suits. Why not cut out the middle-man? Pitch a good idea (your story), get funding, and do the whole thing. That's what new-media types do and it's getting easier as the technology spreads that makes amateurs look like professionals.
I have a feeling the writers struck over yesterdays's realities.
