Push Presents

Does a woman deserve a present for giving birth? There was a time when child-birth was viewed as a rite of passage, much as the first hunt was for a man. A woman was lavished with gifts of different sorts. And, women were supported by other women.

Society has changed. And then again, it hasn't. What was old is new again. Women are getting "push presents"--presents for pushing out a baby. Since most women don't push and barely feel the kid coming at all since they're drugged up, I find this a funny description, but whatever. In this narcissistic age, women gain weight, lose control of bodily functions and I guess that merits a gift, right?

In a more innocent age, new mothers generally considered their babies to be the greatest gift imaginable. Today, they are likely to want some sort of tangible bonus as well.

This bonus goes by various names. Some call it the “baby mama gift.” Others refer to it as the “baby bauble.” But it’s most popularly known as the “push present.”

That’s “push” as in, “I the mother, having been through the wringer and pushed out this blessed event, hereby claim my reward.” Or “push” as in, “I’ve delivered something special and now I’m pushing you, my husband/boyfriend, to follow suit.”

These gifts might just have to do with society now. Women are used to be rewarded for their work--they have careers, get paid, etc. They figure that giving birth shouldn't be thankless either.

Well, newsflash ladies, motherhood doesn't pay well. I guess that would be an argument for angling for the biggest gift the hubby will cough up.

This article opens a whole can of worms. My husband bought me a pretty necklace after giving birth to our second baby. He is not one to just think of getting a gift, so when he brought it to the hospital, I knew it was out of total appreciation and admiration for having our baby. I was deeply moved but would have never expected it.

However, I so agree with this article here. There seems to be a trend that so many women in general expect so much from their men...and not just when they have their babies. A friend recently told me that her son's first girlfriend, when asked what she would like for her birthday, asked for a "massage, or a make-over, or a diamond necklace and a fine-dining experience." These kids are only 15 and 16 years old. The son only has a par-time job at the mall and makes $7.00 per hour. I was absolutely shocked at this and wondered where these girls are getting these kinds of notions from and why they would not be embarrassed by their extravagance. I was embarrassed just hearing this story. I will be educating my son in what to look for when it comes time to date a girl.

Interesting article indeed.

I'm a man who is divorced and never had children. I feel terribly guilty that I have never purchased a push present for a woman. Perhaps we can raise my taxes so single mothers do not feel discriminated against and can at least get a push present from the government.

Giving birth and a teenage birthday present seem like entirely different things. The attitude of entitlement is universal.

It is two different things on one level only. The root of it is the same and spills over to all kinds of situations. The reason I compared the two Melissa, is because these same mothers that are expecting "push presents" are the ones setting that example for their own girls. They come by it honestly.

to give a gift celebrating the birth of a child seems reasonable, giving it in the birthing room seems self centered and vacuous. At that moment I would hope that the focus would be on the new child, not the new jewelry. Well, I guess I will find out in a few weeks...
