Austrian Freak

More details. What a lamentable human. Is there a punishment fitting enough for him?

I have a very dear friend who is Austrian...but lives in Munich now. He and his wife are sickened by this.

This man evidently had so much control over his wife and family. One wants to somehow place blame but when a person lives in an oppressive environment, it is difficult to not become psychologically damaged as well.

You're right, I'm not sure there is a punishment fitting for him. He will have to answer for this in another dimension.

The combined years of captivity for all of the victims is, what? Nearly 75-80 years?

And yet I read that this monster, if sentenced to the maximum under Austrian law, would only himself be imprisoned for 15 years.

Absurd.

I can't even begin to imagine the absolute horror and torment that was their lives in that dungeon. My mind almost can't let me imagine it.

May he burn in hell.

Seems simple to me. Arrange his meeting with his Maker, ASAP. I would include the wife. No way she did not know.

chalmers, you have never lived with an oppressive person if you can say that his wife is involved. I'm not sure she was. Perhaps weak, yes. Afraid, yes. I don't think she was involved. Just my opinion. Oppression is a bitch to overcome and some never will.

anon,

I have lived with an oppressive person, for 18 years. At a certain point you either recognize the oppression and do something, or you acquiesce and become a party to the actions, even if only tacitly.

Like a getaway driver, you are responsible. She might not have abused the children herself, but she did know it was going on and did not stop it. Her death would have some honor, but either way, she deserves the same fate as he.

chalmers, have you read anywhere that she knew this she knew what was going on? I have not read that yet. Until then, I am very sympathetic to this women...because this man simply had too much power over her. If you are a man, perhaps you had better opportunities to get out of it. If you are a woman, I'm glad you found the strength to get out of it. I am not so willing to blame her just yet until it is proven that she knew. I know, I know, the whole thing is baazar. Trust me, we questioned it as well. But there remains in me a knowing what oppressors can do to a person. Some people simple have no strength left.
