The Embryonic Stem Cell Sham

I have posted on this topic often--every time some new advance is announced, I try to keep my readers informed. Stem cell research could change the future, but embryonic stem cell research has been, thus far, an abysmal failure. Is that why the New York Times won't write about fantastic new research showing yet another hopeful advance in amniotic stem cell research--namely that they are multi-potent (can become the three germ layers and more) just like the ESC and replicate fast but don't cause cancer? Michael Fumento thinks so:

As stem-cell researcher Malcolm Alison of the University of London told a British newspaper, the amniotic cells "appear to be at least as malleable as embryonic stem cells but without all the ethical baggage."

For all the talk over the morality of using human embryos in medicine, perhaps there's another moral issue at play: Non-embryonic stem cell researchers are already performing miracles, such as growing new heart and liver tissue and treating multiple sclerosis – all in living humans. Yet they struggle to get federal funds for their research.

Given the growing number of state initiatives that fund embryonic stem cell, but not non-embryonic stem cell, research and given that overall National Institutes of Health funding increases are unlikely anytime soon, is it truly moral to take away funds from a technology that's been saving lives for half a century in favor of another technology that promises nothing but "promise"?

Science plays politics in disturbing ways. Michael Crichton's book Next touched on it, but for great insight to something as important as HIV research read Candice Pert's book Molecules of Emotion. Everything from thievery, to withdrawal of funding to deceit. It's a wonder any medical advances even happen. Her book also touches on the science and spirit of "information substances" like hormones and such. A great read!



Anyway, some people simply don't want to be told "no". Some people don't want any doors closed, even if the morals of the action are very iffy. What bothers me most about all the supposed ESC science is the willful deception of the public on this issue by people who claim their mission is finding the truth.

Pluripotent Amniotic Stem Cells

This new development will take all the fun out of abortion justification. Reasons why amniotic stem cells are better:

Atala says that compared with other types of pluripotent stem cells--save embryonic stem cells--AFS cells are "truly pluripotent" and that their major advantage is that after two weeks of culturing they expand quickly, doubling every 36 hours so that they are in large supply.

When compared with embryonic stem cells, AFS cells have two main advantages: First, no embryo needs to be harmed in harvesting the cells, sidestepping a major, hot-button political issue. Also, as Atala points out, AFS cells will not form tumor cells, as the considerably more raw embryo-derived cells can. "They're not as early and they're not as wild," he explains. "The cells are further along the line of development--and you don't see fetuses developing tumors--so these cells are much more controlled." Atala adds that the AFS cells lie between embryonic and adult stem cells in that the former expand quickly, but can develop into tumors, whereas the latter will not become cancerous, but grow exceedingly slowly.
This is truly good news. Sorry to be so snarky, I'm just really tired of the obfuscation and mendacity around this issue. Science surrenders to politics and ethically-challenged politics, at that. My love for Michael J. Fox's humor, notwithstanding, I don't want someone else to die so he won't shake.

My mind is set to wonderin' now. Will stem cell banks open up? For example, I might be willing to have amniocentesis to store it frozen for the cells if necessary. It is probably too soon to tell where this research will go, but the possibilities are truly encouraging.

Making Babies the New Fashioned Way

Sperm donors, egg donors, and embryo choice. Oh my! What's the big deal and who needs reproductive ethical lines? Ann Althouse says:

I suppose the fact that I wrote those questions first reveals that I'm not especially concerned about this new step in reproductive technology. The cry of "eugenics" always goes up, but what are the people who raise it really worrying about? Not the return of the Nazis. It's all-too-convenient the way the Nazis pop up to assist in making the argument you already wanted to make. The real objection is to reproductive choice. Once you have disaggregated reproduction from the full human relationship between the parents, what makes you want to draw the line here? Perhaps your objection is nothing more than resentment that only rich people get to fulfill this preference. If so, who are you to intrude on their private life?

One argument against this new practice is that there are so many embryos left over from infertility treatments and that these embryos should be implanted instead. But, as noted in the article, those leftover embryos are made from the eggs of woman who: 1. is older, and 2. has a fertility problem. It still seems more charitable and unselfish to choose them, but does that make it wrong to want better? We have a sense -- don't we? -- that parenthood means an open acceptance of whatever child happens to arrive and that the desire to be selective reveals that one has not met the parenthood ideal.
When people marry, do they look at their mate genetically? Some do. I marveled at a couple I knew where one party's family had a history of Huntington's Disease. Read about it. It's a brutal, degenerative disease and a kid of a parent carrying the Huntington's gene has a 50-50 shot of getting it. (Suicide is a common end for these people--they know what is coming and can't stop it.) So, this couple, knowing these facts chose not to have the one party genetic tested for the gene and they wouldn't before having kids.

What? That's just irresponsible. Weepy romantic notions have no place when considering the devastation of this kind of disease. So, yes, people should be somewhat choosy about their mates. And these tough discussions should happen between people. It's disturbing that most of these discussions are happening over a petry dish--and not for elimination of problem genetics but for the creation of superior genetics. What is that if not eugenics? And Hitler comes up because we know where this thinking, this slippery slope leads.

Think America isn't on that slippery slope? Have you been in a 1st grade class recently? Parents trying to give their child every edge--putting kids in class at six, seven to have an advantage. Ostensibly these kids were created the old-fashioned way. But when parents have a choice to choose 6'4", blue-eyed, blond, 200#, 200 I.Q. geniuses, don't think for a minute they won't opt for that choice. Oh, and once all the genetics for any perceived deficiency (wide feet, flat nose, gay, curly hair, fill-in-the-blank) are found, parents will have them eliminated.

People unconsciously filter genetic material. People with better looks, facial symmetry, and who are taller can translate into higher I.Q. and better fertility. Even still, once married, the undesirable genetics come through--gimpy, not very athletic, short attention span, stunted social skills. You know all that irritating stuff about your spouse.

Will there come a time when all that can be filtered out by gene or DNA therapy? And do we want a Barbie Doll world? And is this all a stupid discussion 'cuz were all gonna die at the hands of the Boomers anyway? On the chance that the world survives indefinitely, the slippery slope needs to be seriously addressed. Although, I think it might be so much wasted jaw-boning. Just like every killing creation has been used, every eugenic discovery will be used whether legally or on the black market. Rich people are using stem cells from harvested Eastern European embryos and fetuses and babies to look younger and live longer. What's to stop the rest of us once genetics enters the McDonalds realm?

In light of this narcissistic human proclivity, I'm rather traditional. My fertility philosophy is simple: I'm anti-choice except to choose NOT to have children because of genetic fears--like Huntington's. It's called adoption. One of Anne's commenters says, and I concur:
My line was crossed decades ago. I would draw the line at not separating the unitive from the procreative. Translation: unless you can make that child in your marital bed, it's a no-no.

Stem Cell Research & Politics-UPDATES, Scroll Down


What do you say to a guy suffering with a debilitating disease, absolutely convicted about a controversial, non-proven therapy that would involve tax-payers dollars because no private venture will fund it, that is used to promote a political candidate?

John Hawkins expresses my sentiments. I've talked repeatedly about the difference between Embryonic Stem Cell Research versus research on stem cells found in umbilical chord blood, bone marrow, breast milk, and even fat. While the latter actually has already been used and shows great promise, Embryonic Stem Cells don't. Not to mention they are taken from a potential baby that dies that possibly, may give life to someone else.

The implication from the ad is that by voting for the other candidate you're killing Michael J. Fox or at the very least withholding a life-saving cure from him. The ad is exploitive, emotionally manipulative and misleading. Who can respond to this ad without seeming cold and heartless? That's what the Democrats count on, of course. An unanswerable ad, because they are morally superior beings.

I love Michael J. Fox, I think he is funny, smart and has dealt with his disease courageously. I also do not believe American taxpayers should be paying for morally questionable research.

Update: Well, here's a response ad against the Missouri Constitutional Amendment. Holy Cow! Look at the celebs in this one. I hate to even imagine how much it cost to put this thing together. Maybe they're all so filled with purpose, they're doing it for free. Somehow, I doubt it.

That research…made me believe that Embryonic stem cells are like uncut heroin…waaaay, way to powerful to use - they are part of begotten life in its purest form (perhaps still too near to God for our fooling with) - and they are so maleable as to be (so far in research) unpredictable and unusable. And that’s not even getting into the moral and ethical questions of whether or not a human embryo should be exploited in such a way, particularly when Adult Stem Cells are showing remarkable results in everything from helping sufferers of Sickle Cell Anemia and Thallassemias Major and Minor, to spinal injuries, skin regeneration and more.

And I say that as a woman dealing with a chronic blood illness, and waiting to hear - finally - about a diagnosis that has taken a great deal of time to pinpoint. Wrong, Wrong, Wrong: Scientists to Create Rabbit-Human Embryos

Scientists in Britain are actively pursuing a morally bankrupt scheme to fuse human embryos with rabbit egg DNA. The proposed research, first reported last January, would create hybrid human-rabbit embryos. The fused embryos would be 99.9% human and .1% rabbit or cow. The embryos would be allowed to develop for up to 14 days and then destroyed.

Of course, the proposed research is structured to sound harmless enough. It involves "only" .1% rabbit DNA. The human-rabbit embryos will be allowed to mature for "only" 14 days.

You know how these things work. Scientists will start at .1% to get the precedent established, and then they can work their way up from there. In fact, they probably picked the figure of .1% for just that reason. It's the camel's nose in the tent. They'll start .1%, and at 14 days, and then -- why not let the embryos/fetuses grow just a little more? Why not just add a little more human DNA? And a little more? Why, one more day or two -- or one more week -- and we might learn something that could cure a disease!

Indeed, you'll hear a lot about how this kind of research "might" cure Alzheimer's and other diseases, but of course that is a matter of speculation. That is the nature of experimental science. Besides, you can justify anything scientists ever want to do, immoral or not, by appealing to the possibility of new learning that might prove useful in the future.

Yet many potentially useful scientific experiments are never conducted on humans because they are just plain wrong. We don't deliberately create children with deadly diseases in order to test cures for such diseases, no matter how many lives such research might save. We recognize that each and every human life is precious.

Besides, there is more than one way to peel a banana. Scientists are making great strides in using adult stem cells from human fat to grow new tissue such as muscles that might soon repair damaged hearts, peripheral nerves, and even bone. Such research raises no ethical concerns since the stem cells being used are not embryos.

Of course, allowing human embryos to be conceived for the express purpose of destroying them raises the same ethical problems as abortion. Adding animal DNA to a human embryo is even worse.

It's one thing to genetically engineer green glowing pigs, but when you start mixing human and animal genes in an effort to create part human/part animal hybrids, you run into a whole host of moral problems the likes of which the world should never see.

If scientists succeed at this, they or their successors will eventually create embryos, and people, who aren't fully human. The hybrids will be, by definition, biologically "subhuman."

Imagine how the inspiring words of the Declaration of Independence would sound, in such a brave new world:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

In the case of a human/animal hybrid, what inalienable rights would such a living thing have?

And if you had a newborn hybrid that was .1% human, and 99.9% rabbit, or 25% human and 75% rabbit, would it be O.K. to kill it -- or would killing it be murder?

If there is something about killing a newborn rabbit-human hybrid that seems troubling, then killing the same hybrid when it is only a 14-day old embryo is also troubling.

Would you eat a rabbit stew made from a rabbit-human hybrid that was 99.9% rabbit and .1% human? If not, why not?

Granted, there is overlap of DNA throughout the animal kingdom. We've long been told that chimpanzees share 98.5% or 99% of their DNA with humans. It turns out that the number is actually lower -- probably less than 95%.

That's still a lot of similarity. But these are similarities that pre-existed human efforts to tinker with creation. If scientists begin to engineer hybrids that never existed before, they will spring open a Pandora's box the likes of which the world has never seen.

Do you want the kind of world where someone asks, "Are you a man or a mouse?" and someone has to actually stop and think before answering?

Do you want to live in a world where a puppy looks at you with big, sad eyes, and you catch just a glimpse, or more than a glimpse, of a trapped human soul?

We will soon live in that kind of a world, or our children will, unless we draw the line. We need to say "no" to animal-human hybrids of any kind, and we cannot waver in that resolve.

And yet no matter what we do, it is quite possible that foolish scientists somewhere in the world will eventually create human-animal hybrids. What we will do with such unfortunate creatures when they make it to our shores, I do not know. For me, any spark of human life is sufficient to justify the utmost respect.

How we approach these issues will say a lot about our own humanity.

Stem Cells of Aborted Babies at a Resort Near You

Anyone who is staunchly opposed to Embryonic Stem Cell research--me, for one--has seen the future and this is what we saw: babies aborted by economically desperate mothers willing to sell their bodies and babies for money and the "tissue" used for nefarious reasons. The elusive fountain of youth would be a nefarious reason.

My problem with the whole stem cell research thing is that the issue as presented by the press is misleading. I'm NOT against stem cell research. Every person on the planet makes stem cells--a ton of it is stored in an adults fat. Bone marrow transplants are huge stem cell transplants. Kids with sickle cell anemia, adults with leukemia and people with other illnesses already benefit from adult stem cell technology.

Umbilical chord blood has been found to be rich in stem cells. Most moms I know would willingly give their child's umbilical chord to science if it make saving someone's life. Breast milk is rich in stem cells. (Which is another good reason to breastfeed--it indicates to me that the baby's development continues outside the uterus and the breast milk stem cells help the baby do that. In fact, if you have a scratch or your child bumps himself put some breast milk on it--narry a scar. Which I can attest to since my son burnt his hand. The first thing I did was put some breast milk on the injury which was mostly first and second degree burns, with a bit of a third degree burn. No scar.)

No one has to die to use bone marrow or umbilical chord blood (from full-term babies) or fat or breast milk. It is all very ethical.

Not so with embryonic stem cells. In addition, while everyone believes embryonic stem cells hold the future of health, they have shown little promise scientifically. That's why ESC researchers seek government funding. They can't get private funding. So, ESC researchers want your money and my money for ethically questionable research.

Here are the arguments:

  1. These babies are dead anyway
  2. At least it puts abortions to good use
  3. Otherwise they are just "discarded tissue"
  4. Lives could be saved
  5. Isn't it worth a multi-cellular organism, or four month old fetus, or even one person as someone so eloquently put it on a comment in this blog worth the potential (because no lives have been saved yet) to save millions of lives?
Here is the slippery slope:
  1. Already, fetuses (who knows the ages, they are from unregulated ex-communist republics not known for their strict ethical standards) are being sold to resorts
  2. The treatments are not "life saving" they are cosmetic
  3. The "world" doesn't benefit, only the rich, spiritually challenged and ethically empty benefit
  4. The "treatments" are unproven and unregulated
  5. There is zero science to back up the methods
The only positive I see? At least the rich are making themselves into human guinnea pigs. The poor and needy are being spared being used on the experimentation--unless you don't count the mothers and aborted babies, of course. Where are all the ethicists? Is nothing unethical? No, really, without God, nothing is off-limits. Like the comment poster said, he'd okay the death of his child if it would "save the world". And you think peoople don't fancy playing God.

The treatment: Foetal stem-cell injections from £15,000. Malibu psychiatrist William Rader, 67, previously owned a string of private clinics in LA dedicated to treating eating disorders. He recently founded Medra to offer stem-cell treatments to wealthy clients who wanted to combine a holiday on the exotic La Romana beach resort in the Dominican Republic with their stem-cell therapy.

He has arranged for hundreds of patients to be injected with cells taken from six to 12-week-old aborted foetuses since the clinic opened its doors. Initial consultations are done at Rader's LA surgery at Malibu beach. Arrangements are then made for patients to fly out to the luxury resort in the Dominican Republic to have the treatment administered. The promise: According to Medra's website, the foetal stem cell 'detects and then attempts to repair any damage or deficit discovered in the body, as well as releasing growth factors, which stimulate the body's own repair mechanisms.

'Stem-cell therapy is the future. It's just unfortunate that there is so much opposition to it in the West,' Rader says.

And President Bush is portrayed as some kind of unscientific, religious boob for vetoing the troublesome stem cell bill. What a crock! I wish he would wield that pen more often--mostly to kill the out of control spending. But at least nixing this bill was a start.

Unethical, amoral scientists have little compunction about these things. Most of the researchers are doctors with no problem with abortions on demand, any time anyway. They view using the tissue as a logical step (this follows as most are mechanistic reductionists). At least the abortion wouldn't waste precious tissue. The funny thing is that women who abort their babies still aren't likely to be overly thrilled by their fetus becoming someone's facial. Of course, with a little financial incentive.....

An uneducated public is openminded--of course they are for life-saving technology (who isn't?), of course they would be happy if Christopher Reeve was still alive or Michael J. Fox didn't suffer every day with tremors. People are kind and generous. They imagine the need themselves for some miracle cure.

An uneducated public doesn't know what they would be signing on for with Embryonic Stem Cell research. They don't know the differences between stem cell sources, for one. And activists and researchers count on this fact. They want the average person to remain ignorant. Because most people would outlaw abortion-on-demand if given the chance. Most people don't like the idea of using abortion as a birth control method. They certainly wouldn't approve of dead babies being used for arich person's wrinkle.

Breast Fed Babies....Less Anxiety Later

Whenever I read breastfeeding research like this, I always wonder if the results indicate better, almost magical nutrition makes the difference, whether the social bonding early and often with a mom snuggling them close makes a difference or whether the type of person who decides to nurse makes the difference, or all the above?

  1. There is no doubting the nutritional superiority of breastfeeding. It changes to meet a baby's needs. It has thousands of constituents that scientists don't understand and can't even dream about reproducing. It was clearly made for human babies. I mean, duh! We don't feed puppies Kangaroo milk. The question though is how much of a difference long-term does the nutrition make? Is it the nutrients, the stem cells, the what? That makes breastfeeding so great?
  2. There is no doubting the benefits to mother-child bond from breastfeeding. Oxytocin stimulates prolactin and relaxin. The mom is washed in biochemical love juice (as anyone who has cleaned up a blow-out knows, those feelings can be welcome at the end of a thankless day). The mom must slow down multiple times a day to be focused on her baby. You can prop a bottle at six weeks, and many moms do. You can't prop a boob. This forces loving contact over and over and over throughout the day. And anyone who has nursed a child longer notices that the emotional benefits to the child are phenomenal as the baby gets older. A sixteen month old toddler careening around the house helter-skelter calms down in a very sweet way when nursed. It's like drinking a glass of wine--it takes the edge off. Does this social benefit last? Does this intense, people-are-positive and reliable feedback loop create socially adept children and adults?
  3. Mothers who breastfeed, especially longer than a few months, are making a commitment to their child. This commitment is in the form of time. Nursing a newborn can take six hours a day or longer. Nursing an 18 month old can take an hour or more. Nursing changes a mom's diet. No booze. Trying to eat better. Trying to drink enough water. Nursing changes a mom's social calendar. Breastfed babies often don't take to being left for long stretches without food. They're picky that way. So breastfeeding means a different style of motherhood. Does this make a long-term difference in the child's psycho-social development? I don't see how it can't, but I'm not sure how easy it is to quantify.
Anyway, more evidence that breastfeeding is good for you. Some things, you have to work hard to find evidence that it is so beneficial to individuals and society (pot smoking, for example). Other things, like breast feeding just seem like the natural and best thing to do. Maybe 'cuz we're meant to do it.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research: Politicized Non-Science

Also via Betsy's Page (so many smart, well-read people on the net, that I don't have to be everywhere all the time--they do it for me!) this link to an Michael Fumento's Opinion at the Washington Times:

Sometimes it prints easily falsifiable studies, such as this, attacking the usefulness of ASCs. Other times it falsely promotes ESCs. That culminated in January when the journal had to retract two groundbreaking ESC studies that proved frauds.
The journal wants to flood unpromising ESC research with taxpayer dollars because private investors know how unpromising it is. Yet again Science has showcased the scientific and moral bankruptcy of the entire ESC advocacy movement.
I have written over and over about ESC alternatives. The Embronic Stem Cell movement is a red herring. The press loves to frame the President as a narrow-minded rube, but the fact is, he is sparing tax payer dollars. He knows that the science with potential (adult stem cells, chord and placental stem cells) is being funded privately.

The ESC debate is political not scientific.

This stem cell research looks promising. More possibilities that don't include creating and then killing embryos to save some one's life.

Face Transplant & Cloning Reveals Mentally Ill Doctors

On Drudge today, a report that the woman who received the world's first face transplant is mentally ill, highlights the problems with cutting-edge (pardon the pun) procedures and over-eager doctors wishing to make a name for themselves under the guise of serving science.

On this same day, we find that the much heralded South Korean researcher who supposedly cloned 11 stem cells, and who has already admitted "ethical breaches" by asking (coercing?) female employees to "donate" their eggs to science for around $4,000.00 may not have succeeded in cloning anything at all.

In the hyper-competitive world of medical research (and it starts in medical school--remember the post about malicious students planting false tests to gain a competitive advantage? Cut-throats we called them appropriately enough.), immense pressure to present research ahead of rivals causes all kinds of ethical problems. Candace Pert, PhD talks extensively in her book Molecules of Emotion about the nonsense that goes on in this testosterone-charged world of one upmanship.

So, a doctor will take the face of a suicide victim and put it on the face of a woman who attempted suicide--thus the first face transplant. Nice. In France, too, what a surprise!

Another doctor pays for the eggs of underlings and lies about the resulting research. An American researcher from University of Pennsylvania Richard Schatten now is fleeing for his scientific life because he was the lead author on the article even though the research wasn't technically his (this happens all the time in the ass-kissing world of science so research gains more credibility with the "right" name attached and can make it into an esteemed journal like Science).

The whole system is BS. Research funded by taxpayer money reaches scientists who excel at writing for grants, excel at networking and do their time staying permanently attached to the proper derriere. That is to say, U.S. and world hard and soft science research, far from being merit-based, depends on elaborate networks of prima dona controlled information brokering.

Of course, all this research was done with the intent to save mankind, right? Good intentions negate the moral and ethical breeches every time. After all, the only reason this important research is being conducted is so Superman can walk again. What could possibly be more important than that?

Stem Cells Again

Britain needs 150 embryo derived (150 people) stem cells "lines" to form a bank that would help most people. Get the percentages of people helped here.

People who wouldn't consider harvesting a liver from Jo Jo Ja Bip who rides the bus with them to work every day, won't have a problem with taking it from a "theoretical" embryo. Except, there's the little thing that it's not theoretical. The embryo is real. It is ALIVE (a dead line wouldn't work now, would it?). It has potential.

If you could save the whole world by killing an anonymous person, would you? If you could save the whole world, give them life eternal, by killing a friend, would you? If you could save the whole world by killing your child would you? How about 200 people saved? Would you do it then?

Would it matter to you if they consented or not?

Jesus Christ consented to die so that all could live. He CHOSE.

Does any person have the right to take someone else's life and give it to save another's without their consent? Does it matter that the embryo has potential to become a person, but is not yet born?

Just asking.
