Antipsychotics Up Death In Those With Dementia

Antipsychotics should be given to psychotic and schizophrenic people. Period:

Antipsychotic drugs aren't specifically approved to treat dementia. They're mainly used to treat patients with schizophrenia. But people with dementia sometimes suffer delusions or hallucinations and may exhibit violent behavior. Doctors may prescribe antipsychotics to control these behaviors.

I agree with your statement but is this not what some of the problem is? Drs prescribe medication for behaviours instead of looking at the reasons behind or triggers for the behaviours - this then leaves the people supporting those living with dementia with a person who is unable to function due to medication. Surely what we should be doing is to educate those practitioners who prescribe without first asking the questions - why? when? what? Some of the money saved could then go into either research or further training - that is what is needed.
